Welcome to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
A city of east-central Iowa on the Cedar River west-northwest of Davenport. It is a major commercial, industrial, and transportation center. The second largest city in Iowa, it is named for the surging rapids in the river. Cedar Rapids is a city located in Linn County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 120,758.
The city is named after the Cedar River. Cedar Rapids is the home of Coe College, Mount Mercy College, Hamilton College, and Kirkwood Community College. It is a commercial and industrial city as well as a distribution and rail center for an extensive agricultural area. Manufactures include food and beverages, electrical equipment, machinery, and metal and plastic products.
Coe College and Mt. Mercy College are there. Of note are the city's Masonic Library (1884); an art museum with a collection by the artist Grant Wood; the National Czech and Slovak Museum (1995); and Municipal Island, a strip of land in the main channel of the Cedar River, on which the municipal building and a neoclassical war memorial are located. The Duane Arnold Energy Center, the first nuclear-powered generator in Iowa, is nearby.
From its earliest beginnings along the Cedar River with frontier style storefronts to a modern city center with high rise office structures and a diverse mix of retail, entertainment and housing, Downtown Cedar Rapids has consistently functioned as the focus point for this thriving community since 1838. Some people may think that Iowa is nothing more than cornfields, but as the second largest metro area in the state of Iowa with a population of 175,000+, Cedar Rapids will quickly prove that theory wrong.
There are over 100 restaurants in the area ranging from American to Vietnamese fare, 100 night spots that offer anything from dancing to the latest sounds to country line dancing, a variety of activities for the arts buff as well as the outdoorsy type, and the friendliness of a small community all in one place.
